One of the opportunities we were hoping to experience on our stay in Milpa Alta with our sisters is to learn about them and what they do in their mission.

The community is made up of four Sisters from Brazil. They are Sr. Aparecide Quintanilla, Sr. Miçao, Sr. Regina and Sr. Aparecida Menzato. They have all been very patient and understanding and very welcoming to us.

Sr. Aparecide Quintanilla came to Mexico in 1998. She started the missión and is still present here. In the Church, she operates the “library”. It is actually a book store that sells religious articles and books. It is the source of income for the sisters. Sr. Aparecida is well known and liked in the community. She is always smiling and making everyone feel at home.

Sr. Miçao is the oldest member of the community but don`t let that stop her. She could best be described as a combination of Sr. Dolores and Sr. Tersilla. She is up early and goes to bed when everything is done. She does all the laundry which is no easy task since everything is hung outside and ironed before it is given back to the sisters. She also does the linens from the Mass. She also cooks some of the time and takes a turn in the “library” and is actually very good at selling. She has been here since 2004.

Sr. Regina is the youngest member of the community and is full of energy and has fun with our Spanish and we in turn with her English. She works with the youth of the parish and has a children`s choir. They all love her and respond to her well. She seems pretty involved with liturgical things. She is fun to tease and loves catsup. She has been here 1 year and 3 months.

Sr. Aparecida Menzato is the newest member of the community. She came here two months ago and is staying for a year to see if she can do this kind of work. She is learning the language and little by little is involved in shopping, around the house activities and visiting. She also did the “library” by herself this week.

The Sisters are the only Religious in Milpa Alta. They work in the Parish of the Assumption. Sr. Aparecida Quintanilla introduced and encouraged the pastor to get the people involved in their parish by being lectors, ministers of the Eucharist and catechists. The people show great ownership of their Church and are very faithful and dedicated. The Sisters are a big part of the parish and fill in where they are needed. They have included us in their ministry and have allowed us to experience what they do day by day.
