The Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus have served in the Bronx since the early 1930s, first at Santa Maria School and within a few years at Sacred Heart Private School. Sadly, in 2008 it became no longer feasible to operate Sacred Heart Private as an elementary school, but without missing a school year the Apostles opened the doors at 1651 Zerega Avenue to the Sacred Heart Learning Center (SHLC) that September.
Today, SHLC continues the original vision of Sacred Heart Private and strives to serve primarily poor immigrant families through support of the family. Programs such as La Casita de Maria, Mary’s Little House—a Parent Care group, and Circles of Conversation—a place where adults can practice their English as well as tutoring for elementary school children, provide outreach to the entire family.
Where is Sacred Heart Learning Center?
The first two floors of the old Sacred Heart Private building are Santa Maria Early Childhood, a satellite location of Santa Maria School; the third floor of this building and a separate smaller cottage make up Sacred Heart Learning Center today.
Sacred Heart Learning Center is the home of the Alumni of Sacred Heart Private School
Sacred Heart Private served students in the Bronx, NY from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8, following the educational guidelines of the Archdiocese of New York during 1934 through 2008, when it closed. Its mission and original vision live on in Sacred Heart Learning Center.
We hope that the Learning Center will continue to grow and evolve, enabling more students to experience this outstanding early educational foundation. With your help, we can continue to nourish the deeply-rooted Apostle legacy in this community.
You are invited to come back to the “little school with the big heart," Sacred Heart Learning Center, and see all the exciting things that are happening here. Feel free to contact us and continue to check back here for upcoming events to be sponsored for alumni of Sacred Heart Private.
