Christmas Giving: Haiti

Sister poses with people in Haiti“Maria” and “Sara” are lucky to live in a cinder block home in one of the poorest sections of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where the average wage is $1.00 a day. They have no running water, indoor plumbing, or electricity. Each day, thanks to generous donors, they are now able to attend Institution Sacré Coeur de Jésus, a new school run by the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with over 300 other children.

Sr. Zelinda—who has served in Haiti for seven years—recognizes the physical dangers, as well as the spiritual and emotional impact of growing up amid the crippling poverty and destruction left by Haiti’s 2010 earthquake.

Each day, Sr. Zelinda and other Apostles educate the children in a safe and clean learning environment. However, there is no safe space for the children to exercise, play or develop the comradery and self-confidence that come from playing team sports.

Your donation will help the Apostles achieve their dream of building a beautiful outdoor space and gymnasium that will bring “Sara,” “Maria,” and all the children hope and joy. This 7,238 sq. ft. space will include a covered gymnasium, vegetable garden, outdoor play area, and bathrooms— providing the children with a healthy and safe environment that can give them hope for their future. Your donations provide the following:

  • $25 provides basketballs or other sports equipment for the new play area
  • $50 buys seeds for the vegetable garden
  • $100 or more helps pay for protective gym flooring
  • $250 or more helps to provide a roof for the gymnasium
